LATEST NEWS
The cricket season is almost upon us so it's time
for me to tell you to get your kit washed and ready to start the season with a
bang. Indoor nets have been going well, I understand, so we're expecting great
things.
We had our first committee meeting last night and thought I'd give you an early "heads up" as to what is going on:-
Fixture Cards
These are at the printers and should be available
before the end of April
Fixtures
Our first fixture is on
SUNDAY 19TH APRIL - v WORTHING
CHIPPENDALE (AWAY) 2PM START - meet time
12.45pm at the Park
The second game is on
SUNDAY 26TH APRIL - v WORTHING
FORESTERS (HOME) 2.30PM START (I think)
so 2pm meet
PLEASE CAN YOU LET ME KNOW YOUR
AVAILABILITY FOR THESE FIRST TWO FRIENDLY GAMES AS SOON AS POSSIBLE?
Can you get details of availabilities for any new
players (whose e-mail addresses I may not have got)? If you can get my their
e-mail addresses too that would be great.
Skittles
We intended to have a skittles match v Tarratt
Tables during April. However, we've not been able to book a suitable date -
watch this space as we will be holding this event during the season at some
point - probably on a Friday night at The Bull.
Stoolball Match
We have got a STOOLBALL MATCH v THE STOOLBALL CLUB
on THURSDAY 30TH APRIL. This will start at 6.30pm. Luke Woolgar is arranging the
team so please can you let him know if you are available? Even if you can't make
it to play I hope you will come along to watch and have a beer or two?
Cricket v The Football Club
We are hoping to have a 20/20 cricket match against
the Football Club during the season. One or two people from both sides have
expressed an interest so we'll see if we can get something arranged for a
midweek or a Friday evening.
Single Wicket Competition
Johnny Jones, a ex-player and staunch supporter of
the club for more than half a century) has very kindly donated a trophy for our
Single Wicket competition. This will now become an annual event.
The competition for 2009 will take place on SUNDAY 31ST MAY and will be an all-day event starting at about 11am. The plan will be to have a BBQ at lunchtime and have various activities going on to make it a real family day.
Please can you let me know asap if you would like to take part. This competition is open to any current (or past) PGCC players - the prerequisite for entry is that you have played for PGCC prior to 31st May 2009. The fee to enter will be a nominal one as we want to get as many entrants as possible.
A sub-committee has been formed to agree rules etc for the day.
Finances
Moulesie was not able to provide a financial report
for the meeting but, suffice to say, we have purchased 36 cricket balls and paid
various other bills so please can you pay your Annual Subs asap. For those of
you who did not attend the AGM subs remain as per last year - £20 (£10 for
students/colts); match fees are £10 per match for non-annual members (this
includes day membership) and £8 (for paid-up annual members). The match fees are
halved for students/colts (apart from mature students!).
Colts
We heard that quite a lot of youngsters from the
football club want to play cricket. Simon Adlam is ready to get cracking with
organising games etc but we've not heard any more from the football club (Moulesie
- can you chase this as we need to plan ahead if we are going to have a Colts
side this season)
Fundraising
Richard Britton and Luke Woolgar are heading up our
Fundraising Sub-Committee and to say they're "keen" would be an understatement.
I think there will be a lot of things to look forward to during the season -
watch this space. I think Richard and Luke are planning to enlist at least one
more member onto their team so feel free to contact them if you are interested.
Newsletters
I have committed myself to producing a regular
newsletter (which will take the form of a 4-page A4 paper). How regular will
depend on how successful this is and how cost effective. It will be issued free
to members, life members and vice presidents and we'll have copies spare for
anyone interested. The idea is to get more people interested in playing for, or
supporting, the club.
Website
We do have a website (pgcc.play-cricket.com) but
Richard Britton is looking into the possibility of setting up our own
independent website. Richard is going to report back at the next committee
meeting so I'll let you know how he gets on. The website would hopefully be more
user friendly than the play cricket one.
Batting & Bowling Cups
We have agreed to amalgamate the Club and League
Batting awards and Club and League Bowling Awards from 2009 onwards. We want to
have perpetual trophies for Batting and Bowling. Nigel Tomsett has very kindly
offered to donate a batting trophy so we are looking for sponsors for a bowling
trophy (please contact me direct if you would like to sponsor a trophy).
That's all for now but don't forget to let me know your availability for the first 2 cricket matches and the single wicket competition and to let Luke know ref the stoolball.
The first newsletter should be out by end of April so look out for that - it will contain quite a bit of information regarding League Cricket in 2009 as there have been lots of changes from last year.
The next committee meeting will be w/c 11th May so please let me know if there are any other issues you would like raised.
Regards
Mark
